I used some clear 5 minute epoxy to glue the dime to the switch. Hot glue would probably work just as well.  Are you planning to put a switch in the coin slot of your 3W1 or SC?

Looks good. I might have to do one of those myself.

Yes many different brands. Different versions of some brands too. I’ve seen mine with zero to three lenses. My speakers are 5″x7.5″x5″ and weign about 2 1/4 pounds each. The junction box probably weighs a little less than a speaker.

Here are some photos to give you an idea. The junction box on mine is larger than many because it has a light. That came in handy because there was enough room to put the Bluetooth receiver/amplifier inside.  If taken apart the pieces are smaller than the speakers. Everything could be fit inside someone’s luggage if they had some extra room. You probably would want to get a base and pole locally.

I forgot about VAT and customs taxes. Now I remember paying almost double the price for some shirts I purchased from the US when I lived in London. Ouch!  Maybe you can find a seller that will either send something as a gift to avoid VAT and customs?  Maybe get something unrestored/inexpensive and source replacement speakers and pots from the UK.

I think if I had to put components in a separate box  I would probably build something the wallbox can hang from. Sort of an “L” shape with the box part either in the back or bottom depending on whether I was going to mount it on a wall for set it on a table.

There are lots of them on eBay. I’m sure some of the sellers will ship to the UK  but don’t know how much shipping would be. If you get an unrestored set plan on replacing the speakers and potentiometers. Here’s where I got replacement parts. They have speakers too. https://www.detroitdiecast.com/

I’ll be interested to see if you can fit everything inside the wallbox. Is the coin mechanism removable?

As for speakers I would probably do something with Bluetooth since the 3W1 doesn’t have any built in. That gives a little more freedom as to where you put them and the sound will probably be a little better (no buzzing).  I have a pair of drive-in speaker that I added a Bluetooth receiver/amplifier to that work pretty well. Got the receiver/amplifier directly from China off eBay. My home stereo also has a Bluetooth capable amplifier so I can connect to that too.

UPDATE: I took mine apart and cleaned the switch contacts and the plate that the two pins rub against and now it’s working! There were black streaks where the pins rub against the contact plate. I suspect that was the problem. Not sure I understand how that would affect the selection but it’s working now so all is good.

    Hey Paul,

I asked my friend who I’m setting up the wallbox for if he was interested in one of yours and he may be but has some questions. Do you know how much postage would be from the UK to Oklahoma (73072)? Have you tested it and know it works?

I’m also curious about the model and code(s) on yours. I notice both of the ones I have are model APU 10-56 but the codes are different. The one that works is S424 and the one that doesn’t is S443. I’m wondering if the codes are meaningful and the S442 is an incorrect version.  They both look exactly the same to me.

I’d also be interested in the email for your sources in case I need something in the future.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Thanks for the offer but I’m okay just using the A8-V8 selections as albums. I’ve already re-arranged the song list. Now just need to re-do the index labels so the “8s” are in front and back instead of the “1s”.

Are you in Europe? I’m in the US. Oklahoma to be exact.

I swapped the credit units are sure enough that seems to be the problem. Good to know but I think I’ll still just use A8-V8 as albums instead of trying to troubleshoot the credit unit.

Nice job! Yes mine both have wavy washers that press the rockers together. The problem on one of mine was that either the teeth were too wide or the grooves were too close together so there was a lot of friction between them. Strange. I can’t imagine that it ever worked properly that way. Someone must have mixed replacement parts at some point. I fixed mine by grinding several teeth so they were slightly thinner.

Were you able to salvage the pin that holds the knob on the shaft? If not, I found 1/8″ pop rivets fit well. I ground the top part of the rivets off and used just the shaft. Then a little epoxy to hold it in place.

Good idea. I may just use A8-V8 for the albums and call it good.

Yes but getting the pin out was the hard part. I broke a few drill bits trying to drill it out first. Eventually I got it out with a home made nail punch that I ground down to match the size of the pin.

I had a similar problem with the pages jamming when they were turned down. In my case there were two problems. The first was that the fingers were squeezed really tight between the retaining washers. That caused a lot of friction so they didn’t drop very well. On my other (good) mechanism the fingers had a little bit of play. Just enough that there was no friction caused by the adjacent fingers. The other problem was the gear with the bent tooth was causing it to bind and not drop down. The four springs on the back help push the pages forward so they come down. Adjusting those to press harder against the finger will help with those four pages but not the others.

The third problem with mine was that they wouldn’t stay all the way up properly when the last few pages were turned up. They would lean forward and cause it to jam when trying to turn them down. One issue was that the hole in the side where the selector rod goes through was worn so there was about 1/16″ of play. That kept the cam on the selector rod from pressing against the fingers far enough. I fixed that by bolting a backup bushing to the side to hold the selector rod where it’s supposed to be. That made a big difference.

The other issue is a weak design with the cams on early versions. The “partial” cams on the early ones only hold a page up while it’a being raised. It stops holding that page up when the next page is raised. The newer “full” cams continue to hold a page after others are raised. This helps keep the pages from leaning forward particularly when several are turned up. Apparently they made adapter kits at one time as this was a common problem. Fortunately mine works now and I didn’t have to try and modify mine.

Good to know there’s a backup plan.

If they’re really bad I would probably remove the damaged part and then try making a mold and filling it with epoxy.

Sounds like it could be a challenge depending on how bad they are. I just repaired a page holder unit that had several problems. One problem was one of the fingers had a tooth where a small part of the tip was  bent over. That caused it to bind so the page wouldn’t drop down. I trimmed the damaged part off and it works okay now.

Scudie – I found mine at an antique store. There are usually some on eBay. I added a 12v Bluetooth receiver/amplifier to mine. Also converted the light to 12v. Here’s the Bluetooth unit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-x-8-Watt-Class-D-Bluetooth-4-0-Audio-Amplifier-Board-TSA3110A-V2/321568945704

Klaatu – Those speakers look great!
